These days wedding cakes are more than a few traditional white tiers, 2016 will see wedding cakes reach a new level of show-stopping beauty. As brides take their cakes to new heights with decorations and styles to dazzle their wedding guests, we’ve found a few of trends we believe will be the most popular in 2016.

Toppings with a difference
Traditional wedding cake decorations such as real flowers, berries and sugar flowers will still be hugely popular in 2016 for topping cakes thanks to their beauty, but sugar flowers will take on a new form as laser cut florals become popular with brides looking for a modern take on the embellishment. Buttercream is also going to be more popular with creating embellishments and not just for covering the sponge layers as cake designers push the boundaries and put a modern spin on classic buttercream.
2016 wedding cakes will be transformed into works of art as they are decorated with meringue peaks coloured to match the wedding theme, delicious luxury truffles and stunning macaroons make beautiful embellishments on wedding cakes and bring them up to date for 2016.

Metallics
Metallics became super popular for weddings over the course of last year, from stationary to room décor, copper, gold and silver have made it onto cakes now. From entire tiers covered in gold foil or silver leaf to flecks of gold leaf or a wash of 24k gold paint, indulgent sugar crystals and copper coloured beading, it’s not hard to see why the glamourous trend is so popular. From stylized glam to art-deco to the old-Hollywood look, metallic icing can add a very elegantly expensive look.

Watercolour
Watercolour has been used on stationary with increasing popularity and has now extended to cake décor. All kinds of painted cakes are set to surge in popularity this year as couples can really add their own personal touch and pops of colour and design in a fun way. Watercolour painted onto chic white royal icing looks contemporary stylish and is a great way to add some soft colour to your cake,

Ombré cakes
Ombré can be done a few different ways with wedding cakes. Go bold by using solid colours in royal icing making each tier a different shade of your chosen colour, or for a softer look adapt the watercolour trend and paint your colour on gradually getting lighter. For a slightly more modern look use butter-icing, buttercream is set to be more popular on wedding cakes as brides find the use of royal icing a little too conventional. For a twist on the ombre, surprise your guests by having the sponges made in different shades so when you cut into your cake you can see the full impact and add some fun to your cake.

New and improved naked cakes
Whether you loved them or hated them, naked cakes are still going to continue to be popular with brides in 2016 as they suit so many different themes, however, 2016 will see naked cakes become bigger and better though. Instead of stripped back, randomly decorated cakes of last year, this year will see skimmed buttercream smoothly applied with subtle peaks of sponge beneath, design-led florals and ornate decorations taking the cakes to a new level of wedding glamour.
