Shopping for your wedding dress is one of, if not THE, most important elements of your wedding day (after marrying your partner of course!). What becomes a dream can be a stressful experience until you find ‘the one’.

Below are 8 top tips for taking out some of the stress when searching for your dream dress:

Tip 1: Start 6-8 months in advance – Wedding dresses take a long time to alter, especially custom made gowns and embellished dresses, and peak wedding season is the busiest time of all for alterations so bear this in mind. If you have no clue what you’re looking for or are quite picky, then perhaps allow a little more time just in case you don’t find the one straight away.

Tip 2: Book an appointment – Most bridal shops require an appointment in advance anyway but always book to ensure you get enough time to try everything. If you can only make Saturday appointments you’ll need to book quite far in advance as this is the most popular day, this does however means the shop will probably be busier so if you’d prefer a calm environment try and go on a weekday. Another tip is don’t book more than three appointments in one day as trying on all these gowns can be quite tiring and you want a clear mind for choosing your perfect dress!

Tip 3: Know your budget and stick to that area – If you know you can’t spend more than £2,000 on your dress don’t try on the gowns that cost £6,000 because you’ll end up tempting yourself and could fall in love with a dress that you can’t have, and that could lead to some tears!

Tip 4: Only bring two or three people with you – It’s your opinion that truly matters and how you feel, although you may value your mother or best friend’s opinion too, the choice is yours and how you feel is number one. Too many opinions could cause stress, stop you expressing yourself and stop you from making a decision.

Tip 5: Bring the essentials – Wear the right underwear for trying on dresses, a good strapless bra is a staple. If you’ve already got your shoes bring those along, otherwise bring some that are about the height you’re planning on wearing.

Tip 6: Try everything – you may have set your heart on a certain style or shape of dress you’ve seen in a magazine or on Pinterest, but when it comes down to it that particular dress might not be the one for you and it could just be a style you hadn’t even originally considered that looks perfect.

Tip 7: Do listen to the assistants – they specialise in bridal gowns so are the experts! They’ll know just from looking at you what shapes and colours will flatter you and although they’ll try to accommodate your desires as best they can, do listen to any suggestions they make because it could just be the perfect one!

Tip 8: Don’t buy a dress that is too small. Even if you’re planning on losing weight, it’s much easier to take in a dress than make a small dress fit and you don’t want to experience the heartbreak of your dream dress not fitting on the day.
