Milsom Weddings

The world of wedding planning can be something of a minefield. There’s a good chance you’ve never planned anything of this scale before, and that you never will again.

So, how do you make sure the day runs smoothly? While it’s usually a good idea to seek out a professional opinion or two, it certainly helps to know where to start – the teams at Milsom Weddings are highly dedicated and friendly, but can’t read minds at this stage! We recently shared our practical wedding advice in a separate blog post. Here are a few dos and don’ts that can accompany that guide to ensure a stress-free, and even enjoyable, planning experience.

DO…

Get organised

Whether you purchase a binder, allocate a notepad or download an app, it’s essential that you get organised before making any decisions regarding your wedding. Planning an entire wedding is a huge task, with facts, figures, quotes, receipts and ideas regularly circling overhead. Don’t leave a thing to chance, and ensure you know where you are and what you’re doing at every turn.

Consider one another’s feelings

It would be very easy to plan a wedding if yours were the only feelings to take into consideration. We’re sure you’ve often thought about the kind of day you’d like to have, down to every last detail. However, it’s important to remember that there are two of you getting married. Listen to each other, discuss details calmly and prepare to compromise whenever a stalemate is reached. You’re getting married for a reason; keep that dedication to each other in the fore of your minds. No floral arrangement is worth an argument.

Choose your venue carefully

While factors such as budget, location and availability are all important in your quest for a venue, it’s always a good idea to go with your gut on this one. Having viewed a venue, ask yourself this; did it inspire you? Be on the lookout for helpful and knowledgeable team members, a certain kind of ambience, and food packages that will impress your guests. We have venues across Suffolk and Essex offering a little something for everyone – from the stunning riverside location of Le Talbooth in Colchester, to the magnificence of Kesgrave Hall near Ipswich, our venues and packages will blow you away.

DON’T…

Allow envy to overtake your wedding day

The wedding industry is filled with mood boards, Pinterest pages and Instagram feeds, and it’s so easy to fall victim to the green-eyed monster. It’s essential to remember that this is your wedding day, though; the ideas that appear to work across social media won’t always translate into your big day. Besides, allowing envy to invade your wedding will result in a spiralling budget and a day that isn’t what you wanted at all.

Let anyone else dictate your day

This is your day, so do it your way. When a parent or family member is paying for an element of your wedding, it’s very easy to be railroaded into doing what they want; isn’t that the right thing to do? However kind their gesture, be sure to emphasise what you have in mind for your wedding. The chances are they’ll love it just as much as you do – or will be prepared to compromise for something you’ll all adore.

Be tempted to splurge

You’ve allocated a wedding budget for a reason, so try and avoid splurging, wherever possible. It’s so easy to see and fall in love with items you’d not counted on, but the cost of your wedding will soon rise if you say yes spontaneously. Ask yourself what you cannot do without, and allocate the rest of your budget accordingly. Come to our next wedding show for some inspirational ideas that won’t cost the earth.

We look forward to welcoming you to any of our exceptional venues for your wedding day. Whatever you need, and however your planning is going, we’ll be on hand to ensure you have the very best day imaginable. If you’ve yet to book your venue but could still use a little advice, don’t hesitate to contact us – with 60 years’ experience, there’s very little we can’t help you with.
